Quote from Katrina
This appeared in the New York Times today concerning the looting of Walmart in N.O.:
"Not one piece of educational material was taken - the best-selling books are all sitting right where they were left," Captain Canatella said. "But every $9 watch in the store is gone."
It's not really funny, but it makes me laugh: the epitaph of civilization.

I saw that quote too and had the same reaction.
Great minds, Lewis. Great minds!
;)
Makes me laugh, too, since if I was looting, the bookshelves would be one of the things I'd be sure to hit! That and the music CDs. But hey, we are talking luxury items here (in my world)...things I can't afford but dearly love. I'd be what you'd call a scrupulously intellectual looter. If so inclined. :)
Taking a watch is practical. Why would they want to read books, when their lives have been wiped away? I doubt that if this disaster happened to any of us, we'd be raiding a bookshelf. I think we'd go for practical things. Duh...think!
Hey Anon:
Just like taking the Playstations, DVDs, and beer were practical too, huh?
Oh, wait! I know - they took them to trade to the Indians for corn! What a brilliant survival strategy. Brave Pioneers!
Duh, indeed.
