Porn Culture

Ever noticed just how undressed the models in the window of the Gap are? I have, and wondered if it was just because I was turning into mom. But maybe not . . .

There's a new book out - haven't read it yet - called Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture It's getting a lot of attention for calling Camile-Paglia-type-Feminism on it's values. That is, Paglia says sexual power is legitimate power and it should be exploited by women to their advantage.

But isn't there a line between "using" your own God-given T&A to gain power and exploiting another woman's? When did feminism become all about pleasing men? Or is it just a more subversive form of feminism that says a happy man is easier to make into a bitch's bitch?

Ariel Levy, the author of the new book, says feminism is responsible for the creation of "raunch culture," where it's women doing the exploitation. She says, "Raunch culture is not essentially progressive, it is essentially commercial. By going to strip clubs and flashing on spring break and ogling our Olympians in Playboy, it’s not as though we are embracing something liberal — this isn’t Free Love. Raunch culture isn’t about opening our minds to the possibilities and mysteries of sexuality. It’s about endlessly reiterating one particular — and particularly commercial — shorthand for sexiness."

Llama Butcher Steve-O sent me this article about the book in the National Review. Also, Cassandra at Villianous Company has some interesting things to say on the topic.
